In appreciation of World AIDS Day, I urge readers to become educated about HIV/AIDS.

  • Becoming educated about HIV/AIDS will increase understanding of the virus.
  • Understanding the prevention, spread, and treatment of the virus will help reduce the stigma associated with having AIDS.
  • Reducing the stigma of AIDS can influence individuals who may be at risk to get tested, and encourage routine screening for all adolescents and adults.
  • Those who are tested and found to be positive will be informed about safer sex practices and can begin treatment for the viral infection.
  • This, in turn, will impact the local and global community by helping reduce the spread of HIV.
